We're used to hearing the phrase "Buyer Beware" but a new Internet cashier's check scam is one which could turn the seller into a victim.

If a potential buyer wants to send you a cashier's check for more than your asking price, asks you to cash the check and then send him or her the difference, DON'T!

A new internet scam involving phony cashier's checks has already victimized dozens of persons throughout the United States. If a deal sounds too good or too odd to be true, it probably is. Here are a few tips:

Never accept a cashier's check for an amount greater than your purchase price.
Personally contact the bank that issued the cashier's check as soon as you receive it and verify the check's authenticity. Do not rely on the bank phone number that the buyer gives you.
Do not turn over your sales item before verifying the authenticity of the check. Remember, a cashier's check can be fake, and today's forgeries look like the real thing.
Be cautious with any buyer who speaks in broken English or uses unfamiliar business terms. For example if they say that they will have their shipper pick up the item.
